The WILD BUNCH Rides Again!

The Colt Peacemaker ruled in the old west, but John Moses Browning’s 1911 won the 20th century. The Single Action Shooting Society has had their main focus on pre 1900 firearms, but the popular Colt Model 1911 has been added to the mix in a new shooting category called the Wild Bunch.

SASS Wild Bunch Action Shooting is a multifaceted amateur shooting sport in which contestants compete with firearms typical of those used in the taming of the Old West just after the turn of the 20th century. It is a combination of Cowboy Action Shooting and modern Action Shooting. It uses 1911 semi-automatic pistols, pistol caliber lever action rifles, and 1897 pump shotguns. Contestants shoot in several three gun stages (courses of fire) in which they engage steel targets. Scoring is based on accuracy and speed. The 1911 must be a military spec model, no extended magazine wells or fiber optic sights are allowed, but you can modify the gun internally. But, that doesn’t mean they can’t be fast. This is where the SASS Wild Bunch meets the USPSA Single Stack Division and IDPA’s CDP and IPSC.

We think this has the potential for being a new exciting sport in Oklahoma that would interest people from a wide variety of shooting disciplines. We are following the SASS Wild Bunch Rules (sassnet.com/wildbunch), however we will be lenient with the gun and clothing restrictions. Any pistol caliber lever action rifle is allowed, any basic 1911, and any pump shotgun. Clothing minimum is jeans, button shirt, boots and cowboy or military hat.

We shoot on the Sunday following the second Saturday match. Start time is 10:30AM from November through April, and 9:30AM May through October. Matches are held at the Cowboy Action/Action Pistol Range. We invite you to come out and join us in a lot of fun or just to see what it’s all about.
